Amigurumi dragon patterns have become quite popular lately, and a sleeping baby dragon I shared a few months ago was especially well received. Now, I’m excited to introduce a brand new dragon pattern to add to the collection! While the previous dragon was adorable, it was a bit more challenging to make due to the lack of step-by-step photos. That said, both designs are absolutely charming in their own ways. However, I would say that today’s dragon requires a bit more technical skill.
Detailed Amigurumi Dragon Tutorial and PDF Pattern
What you see here is a test version of the amigurumi toy. If you’d like to see the original photos and get more detailed information, be sure to check out the designer’s Instagram profile. The original version of this dragon was made in yellow, but I personally love this soft pink tone. Since these types of toys are made with plush or velvet yarn, you’ll need to be extra careful when assembling the pieces and sewing everything together.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the details of this adorable crochet dragon!

The crochet dragon features an incredibly detailed yet adorable design. The shape of its body, especially the wings, becomes more defined thanks to the white borders — this is particularly noticeable on the tail. First, we’ll crochet the head and body. This part consists of 58 rounds, and you’ll need to stuff the toy as you go. You can place the safety eyes between rounds 8 and 9, with an 11-stitch gap between them. After that, we continue shaping the body using increasing and decreasing techniques.

Finish stuffing, cut the yarn, fasten off and close.
For the dragon’s back, you’ll need to create a long chain using white yarn. The recommended length is 43 chains, but feel free to adjust it as needed. This piece should run from round 10 to round 53 of the main body. Let’s go ahead and crochet this section too.
Back ridge
1. ch 43
NOTE: depending on the yarn you are using you may need less or more chains, the goal is for it to go from round 10 to round 53.
Leave a long tail for sewing, cut the yarn and fasten off.
Ready to make the dragon’s large, eye-catching wings? Each wing consists of 6 rounds. The white borders around the edges probably caught your attention — these are made separately, usually using slip stitch technique. Be sure to check the images below to guide you through making and attaching these detailed pieces. They really add a dramatic look to the wings.
Wing – make 2
1. 6 sc in MR (6)
2. ch 2 and turn, start in the third st from the hook, 6 hdc (6)
3. ch 1 and turn, start in the second st from the hook, 1 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 1 sc (8)
4. ch 2 and turn, start in the third st from the hook, 8 hdc (8)
5. ch 1 and turn, start in the second st from the hook, (inc, 1 sc) repeat 4 times (12)
6. ch 1 and turn, start in the second st from the hook, (1 sc, [hdc, dc], [dc, hdc], 1 sc) repeat 3 times (18)
Now do not turn, continue in the same direction of your current row and make sc around the wing until the start of your current row (see photo).
Using color B yarn (white) start from one of the corners of the wings (see photo) and make sc on the sides of the wings and sl on the ends of it. Cut both colors, leaving long tails for sewing.
Now let’s assemble the back components of the toy. First, you’ll need to sew the long white chain from the head all the way to the end of the tail. Don’t forget to follow the round numbers closely — everything is clearly explained in the instructions below. Then, attach the wings to the body. You’ve probably noticed their puffed appearance, which makes them look even more dynamic.
Back Assembly
1. Sew the ridge from round 10 to 53 in a straight line.
2. Sew the wings along the golden stitches left on the wing from row 29-30 to 33-34 – 3 stitches away from the ridge.
If needed weave the yarn tails you left towards the top of the wing so you can use them to sew.
The dragon’s tiny horns are crocheted with white yarn in just 2 rounds. You’ll sew them onto the top of the head, but I recommend waiting until you’ve also finished the ears. It’s best to attach the horns and ears together to position them evenly.
Horns – make 2
1. 4 sc in MR (4)
2. 4 sc (4)
Leave a long tail for sewing, cut the yarn and fasten off.
No need to stuff.
The ears are also crocheted in 2 simple rounds, but when attaching them to the dragon’s head, you’ll need to fold them slightly. Once they’re done, sew the horns and ears in place as shown in the reference photos.
Ears – make 2
1. 6 sc in MR (6)
2. 6 inc (12)
Fold your work in half and make 2 sc through the two sides. (See photo) Leave a long tail for sewing, cut the yarn and fasten off.
Did you notice the detail on the dragon’s tail? I found it really charming. From what I remember in cartoons, dragons often had tails shaped like the end of a spear — and this detail is recreated beautifully here using white yarn. I absolutely loved that choice.
Tail
1. ch 16
2. Start in the second st from the hook, (1 sc, [sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc], 1 sc) repeat 5 times Leave a long tail for sewing, cut the yarn and fasten off.
As mentioned before, you’ll need to wait to attach the horns and ears. This section explains exactly where and how far apart to sew them, so your dragon’s face will look symmetrical and expressive.
Face Assembly
1. Sew the horns on top of the head, on either side of the tip of the ridge, 2 stitches apart. rounds 10-11, 12-13.
2. Sew the ears next to the horns, using the flat end of the ear, rounds 11-13.
The toy has two different leg designs: front and hind legs. Start with the front legs, which are crocheted in 6 rounds. Due to the shaping and decreases, they almost resemble little wings, but their small size makes them look super cute.
Front Legs – make 2
1. 6 sc in MR (6)
2. (1 sc, inc) repeat 3 times (9)
3-5. 9 sc (9) – 3 rounds overall
6. (1 sc, dec) repeat 3 times (6)
Leave a long tail for sewing, cut the yarn and fasten off.
Stuffing optional.
The hind legs are crocheted in 5 rounds and have a slightly chubbier structure. If you’re ready, go ahead and finish crocheting both legs to complete the final body parts.
Hind Legs – make 2
1. 4 sc in MR (4)
2. 4 inc (8)
3. (1 sc, inc) repeat 4 times (12)
4-5. 12 sc (12) 2 rounds overall
Leave a long tail for sewing, cut the yarn and fasten off.
Stuff the leg.
Now that all parts are ready, it’s time to sew them together. These include the front legs, back legs, and the tail. Once you’ve attached all the pieces as described in the instructions below, your dragon will be complete. I feel so lucky to have the chance to introduce you to this stunning design!
Finish Assembly
1. Sew the front legs flat on the bottom of your dragon between rounds 25-26, 2 stitches apart.
2. Sew the hind legs on the sides of the body 35-36 to 40-41, top of the legs 4 stitches apart.
3. Sew the tail ridge from the row where the back ridge ended to the end of the tail and down the other side.
Congratulations!
